Citizens issue call for greater water security across Canadian Prairies

25 organizations issue recommendations to government for more sustainable water use

In recognition of World Water Day, 25 non-profit organizations, community groups, and water experts have joined together to challenge governments to ramp up water protection measures across the Prairie Provinces.

“Our waters are intricately connected across the Prairie Provinces,” says Lindsay Telfer, Director of the Sierra Club Prairie and coordinator of the initiative. “Alberta is the headwaters for river systems flowing both east and north. If upstream users ineffectively manage their use of water then everyone downstream is at risk.”

After extensive consultation across the three Prairie Provinces, the Prairie Water Directive was developed to provide a vision to achieve sustainable water management across the region. The Directive articulates recommendations — citizens’ expectations — for government management and protection of the region’s water sources.
