Water Matters has collaborated with government and industry to develop a framework for the development of water conservation plans by every major water-using sector.
Conservation, Efficiency and Productivity Plans
Until recently, the Water for Life goal to improve the efficiency and productivity of water by 30 percent (by 2015 from 2005 levels) had no implementation plan. Water Matters' engagement on the Alberta Water Council resulted in an agreement to develop water conservation plans for every major water-using sector (oil and gas, oil sands, irrigation, forestry, electricity, municipalities, chemical/petrochemical) by 2010. The negotiation also resulted in a new requirement that new water and renewed water licenses would be conditioned on the incorporation of water conservation measures.
